Gold LEaf reverse glass signs
Made using traditional techniques
Reverse glass signs were widely used by shops and businesses in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, combining gold leaf, hand lettering, and decorative glass techniques such as glue-chipping and acid-etching.
Firms such as Rawson & Evans (pictured), operating around the turn of the century were among the pioneers of this craft, producing highly ornate glass signs for banks, brewers, and established businesses. The glass signs shown here are made using the same traditional methods, including some more contemporary techniques either as finished pieces or produced as commissions.

How are They Made?
Traditional glass signs and made using a special technique called βreverse glass painting/gildingβ (also known by the French term verre Γ©glomisΓ©). The design β often gold lettering or decoration β is painted on the back of a piece of glass, then sealed or framed so what you see from the front looks polished and βinsideβ the glass.
